The city is unique as its culture is a mixture of Telangana, Andhra, Hindi and Urdu speaking communities. They brought Urdu with them and naturally, an amalgamation of Hindi, Telugu, and Urdu was born – the Hyderabadi Hindi. It all began during the Muslim rule in Hyderabad. Other than Biryani and Haleem, Hyderabad is also known for its Hindi dialect. Despite all this, Hyderabadi Hindi has always fascinated me to a great extent. When one goes across the city, the change in the dialect is very clear. Old City and Middle City is known for the distinctive Hyderabadi Hindi while the New City is very cosmopolitan in contrast. The Old and Middle Cities were centres of trade and commerce, but the focus has now shifted to the New City i.e. Madhapur, which is at the heart of the tech boom now, was a village where my grandparents got their milk delivered from three decades ago. When my mother was young, they used to shop in the Old and Middle Cities and the New City was literally wilderness then. Now comes the New City which started flourishing from the 2000s. Old City was built during the times of the Qutub Shahis and flourished during the times of the Nizam while the Middle City developed under the Nizams and later under the government. If you ask me, Hyderabad is divided into Old City, Middle City and New City. ![]()
